ChatGPT Ads launched in Switzerland and 30 other European countries on 24 August 2026, the biggest expansion the ad program has made in a single move. This is a new auction, growing fast, and almost every advertiser here is starting from zero.
Start your first ChatGPT Ads small and expand with campaign data. Check how you can access the channel, write one context hint instead of a keyword list, track conversions from day one, and give it two weeks before drawing conclusions. Everything else is detail.
Most of what worked on Google or Meta doesn’t carry over here. That gap is the opportunity.
Quick Wins for Your First ChatGPT Ads Campaign
You can’t just sign up yet
Access to the Swiss market runs through OpenAI’s own Ads Solutions team and a short list of agency and technology partners, not open registration. Self-serve is coming, OpenAI says “later this summer”. Our recommendation: start with the campaign planning now. Once finished, self-service should be available by then.
Forget keywords
Keyword lists don’t exist here. Every ad group instead runs on one written context hint, a short description of the kind of conversation your ad belongs in, and getting that description right matters more than any list of search terms ever did on Google.
Give it a few weeks
The $25 daily minimum isn’t there to prove anything on day one. OpenAI’s system needs a real run of impressions and clicks before it can tell which conversations actually convert. Our Recommendation: give it 2 Weeks before optimising anything.
Install tracking before you spend a franc
Before any real spend goes out, get OpenAI’s pixel installed for browser events, connect the Conversions API for anything that happens server-side like a purchase, and tag landing pages by hand, since dynamic UTM parameters aren’t supported yet.
Keep your targeting expectations modest
Structure your campaigns around what you’re trying to achieve rather than mirroring your product catalog, so a single campaign can cover several products if they serve the same goal (OpenAI Help Center). Targeting is also narrower than most advertisers expect: country-level, and stripped of personalization entirely in Europe to satisfy GDPR. What’s left to target on is the conversation itself, plus device, time of day, and language.
The budget required to test all of this is small. What takes real effort is getting the setup right before that budget starts moving.
Our Verdict on GPT Ads
This is worth testing now, funded with new budget rather than money pulled out of channels that already work. OpenAI puts weekly ChatGPT usage above a billion people, and estimates that one in five of those conversations show some form of commercial intent. Set against that, access is still gated, self-serve has no confirmed date, and targeting is far thinner than what Google or Meta offer.
Advance Insights: FAQs
Franca Ebner, Head of Digital Strategies, has tracked this rollout since the US pilot in February. Here’s what we asked her.
Should a Swiss business start now, or wait for self-serve Ads Manager access?
There is no better moment than now to begin your campaign planning. To be transparent, self-serve access to the Ads Manager is expected to become available in the near term, keeping any waiting period to a minimum. That said, an early start presents a distinct advantage, the opportunity to gather first-mover insights that can meaningfully inform and strengthen your strategy down the line. In fact, by the time you complete the application process, self-serve access may already be live.
How should a marketing team think about “context hints” if they’re used to keyword bidding?
Stop thinking in search terms and start thinking in scenarios. A context hint describes a type of conversation, not a phrase someone types into a search box. Teams that write it like a briefing get better placement.
Does the lack of ad personalization in Europe change what a good campaign looks like here versus the US?
Yes. Without personalization, the context hint is carrying more weight than it did in the US launch. Precision in that one field matters more here than anywhere else the product has launched so far.
What’s a realistic first budget and timeline before judging results?
Run the minimum budget for at least two to three weeks before making any decision. That’s long enough to see real signal.
